Saturday's letters: Never say die, Oilers (1)

We are sitting and feeling upset at the Game 3 Oilers’ loss. I recall clearly the dejection and agony of the 1972 Canadian hockey team, especially after the first four games here in Canada. The country was very upset with the team performance, and they were embarking into enemy territory, going to Russia to play the final four games.

The team rallied and drew inner strength from one another and, guess what? They never quit; they never said die. In that last game, the team rallied and finally Paul Henderson stuffed in the game- and series-winning goal.

Please pass on this message to the Oilers coach and players: that they have the hearts and minds of the nation and they can go all the way. One small step and one win at a time. Go Oilers!

Active transportation is the future

After two more local pedestrians and a rare white grizzly were killed by cars this week, you would think the public would be hollering for safe streets. Instead, there is public pressure to replace transit with bigger roads, faster speeds, and louder vehicles.

Cars are the main killer of people and animals through accidental and intentional collisions, unnatural sedentary lifestyles, carcinogenic and carbon pollution, noise and light pollution, and forced inequality between those who have and don’t have cars. Paris has permanently replaced roads with bike routes since the COVID-19 pandemic and seen a drastic drop in all types of pollution.

Closer to home, car traffic is actually shrinking in many high-growth North American cities. We must continue the good work designing and retrofitting communities around healthy walking, rolling, and biking for short trips; electrified public transit for longer trips; and reducing unnecessary travel. Active transit is the undeniable future.

Riverhawks put on a show

The Grade 4 and Grade 5 students, from St. Mary School attended the “School Spirit” Riverhawks baseball game at Re/Max Field on Wednesday, along with 7,000 other students. What fun we had in spite of the drizzly weather. The Riverhawks organization welcomed us and put on a great show. From jaw-dropping science experiments to the gathering of several local mascots and, of course, the classic ball game sing-a-longs, the stadium was in party mode.

I would recommend a Riverhawks baseball game for anyone who enjoys sport, entertainment and supporting an enthusiastic organization. Let’s go, Riverhawks.

Kathleen Eistetter, Grade 5 teacher, St. Mary School

CWB joining ATB makes sense

Re. “National Bank moves to expand to Western Canada,” June 13

I wonder why Canadian Western Bank doesn’t merge with ATB? CWB pays with shares, the ATB (the Alberta citizens) receives significant ownership in a profit-driven larger enterprise. Stays as a western-based organization and benefits all Albertans. Simple.
