Mommy Long Legs

Encountered for the first time in Poppy Playtime's second chapter, Experiment 1222, or Mommy Long Legs, is the calculating overseer of the Game Station and the big bad we have to face on our way to Playcare.

A spider-like stretchy pink toy, Mommy has a sinister streak, toying with you through the game and forcing you to play sad*stic games in exchange for the train code you need to escape. Like many of the other toys, Mommy was a creation of the Bigger Bodies Initiative and was used by Playtime Co. to usher children through the Game Station, where their aptitude to be made into Bigger Bodies experiments was tested.

Mommy seems to be somewhat allied with the Game Station's roster of toys, with the player having to face Bunzo Bunny, the army of tiny Wuggys, and PJ Pug-A-Pillar throughout Mommy's games. We also quickly discover she has no love in her heart for Poppy, who she takes hostage and uses as a bargaining chip to ensure we don't leave the Game Station without playing her sad*stic trials.

Mommy Long Legs' Origins

The history of Mommy Long Legs stretches back to the 90s. Initially, Mommy was an original design not born from a toy, with the scientists wanting to make an experiment with a unique elastic design. As the Transfer Request form from Chapter 2 teaches us, Playtime went on to create this experiment using an orphan from Playcare called Marie Pain.

We don't know too much about Marie, although a tape in Chapter 3 informs us that she was plagued by nightmares induced by Catnap's Red Smoke. After Marie became Mommy Long Legs, the scientists grew concerned as she showed increased hostility towards the employees of the factory.

As the Transfer Request Form tells us, her "hostility [was] quickly becoming problematic," however, the team managed to find a solution. Mommy cared deeply for the kids in the factory, and while around them, was incredibly docile and motherly. The scientists decided they'd use Mommy for a very specific purpose — she'd watch over the Game Station and help test the children.

The children would participate in three games under the watchful eyes of Mommy Long Legs. They started with Musical Memory, which tested their memory, moved on to Whack-A-Wuggy, which tested their reaction times, and closed out with Statues, which tested their physical aptitude. As we learn during Chapter 2, it doesn't seem like Mommy particularly enjoyed her role in the Playtime Co. experiments. While talking to the player, she tells them:

"it was always so sad to see the kids go. They called me Mommy because I was the closest thing they ever had to one. But they'd come for games and never come back."

It doesn't seem like Mommy's notion of the kids loving her is false either. Playtime Co. saw how much the kids loved Mommy and went on to make a toy of her, which became a successful toy line, branching out with two spin-off characters: Daddy Long Legs and Baby Long Legs.

Mommy Long Legs' Involvement in The Hour of Joy

Mommy's hatred of Playtime eventually led her to join forces with The Prototype and become a key part of the Hour of Joy in 1995.

Tapes from the event show Mommy attacking employees in the Game Station, participating heavily in the massacre. During the events of Project Playtime, it seems she also joined forces with The Prototype to repel the operatives who entered the factory under the command of Leith Pierre.

However, Mommy was clearly scared of The Prototype. When we first meet her, she challenges us to complete the three games the children completed in the Game Station. Due to the final game, Statues, having no finish line, we're forced to escape without completing the trial, causing Mommy to finally hunt us down for 'cheating'. After a chase, the player manages to trap Mommy in a Grinder, where she's ultimately killed.

Before she dies, she begs us to save her. In this moment, she doesn't fear dying, but instead fears The Prototype, saying "What have you done?! You'll make me part of him!" It seems, despite aiding The Prototype, she was terrified of it assimilating her into itself. Her fears are ultimately proven correct after The Prototype's spindly hand pulls Mommy Long Legs' corpse away moments after.

For now, it seems Mommy Long Legs' relevance to the story is wrapped up, although there's always a chance we'll learn more about our bright pink former adversary in the chapters to come.
