Why you will love these sandwiches

Valentine's Day is right around the corner and these petite heart-shaped sandwiches are a delicious way to celebrate. They have just three ingredients and don't require any cooking.

Strawberry tea sandwiches are fun for kids and adults alike. Serve for breakfast, as a light lunch, or as an after-school snack.

Or put together a fun tea party with other small nibbles like BLT cups, lemon curd tarts, mini goat cheese balls, and cucumber canapes. For a savory version, try cucumber and radish tea sandwiches.

Ingredients

Easy Strawberry Tea Sandwiches (2)
  • Bread - It's most important to use fresh bread. White bread is very popular for tea sandwiches, but pumpernickel, rye, and wheat are great options too.
  • Strawberry cream cheese can be found in most supermarkets or at your local bagel shop. If not available, plain cream cheese is just fine.
  • Fresh strawberries add fresh flavor and a beautiful pop of color.

Step-by-step instructions

See the recipe card for complete instructions and ingredient amounts.

  1. Spread the cream cheese on one side of each slice of bread.
  2. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out two hearts from each piece of bread. You can save the scraps for snacking! I use this 3 inch heart cookie cutter.

No cookie cutter? No problem! Simply trim the crusts off of the bread and cut it in half diagonally and in half again to create small triangles.

  1. Cut the strawberries into thin slices and arrange on top of the cream cheese. For open-faced sandwiches, top all 12 hearts with strawberries. For closed-faced sandwiches, top 6 hearts with strawberries and then top with the other 6 hearts.

Can I make these sandwiches ahead of time?

For best results, I prefer to make these right before serving to keep the bread as fresh as possible. If necessary, the sandwiches can be prepped no more than one day ahead of time.

Prepare and wrap in wax paper, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If the berries are juicy, wait to layer them on top just before serving to prevent the sandwiches from turning soggy.

Easter brunch or Mother's Day - Serve a buffet of sweet and savory dishes: tea sandwiches, scones, deviled eggs, ham, fruit salad, broccoli cauliflower salad, sausage cheese balls, and hashbrown casserole.

Baby or bridal showers - Create a pretty 3-tiered tray of sweet and savory tea sandwiches - strawberry, cucumber, egg, ham, or chicken salad.

Tea sandwiches are small in size and the fillings are typically dainty and light. Common fillings include spreadable cheeses, egg or ham salads, and thin-sliced vegetables.

Why are they called tea sandwiches?

Their name comes from these sandwiches traditionally being served as part of a British tea service.

Are tea sandwiches only for afternoon tea?

Petite sandwiches - also called finger sandwiches - are ideal for brunch buffets, bridal or baby showers, Easter menus, Mother's Day, and more. An assortment of small nibbles is a fun way to enjoy lunch with friends - with or without tea.
