Dark Souls II - I'll remember you forever, Lucille. (1)
So I played Dark Souls 2 back on release as a miracle user, relied mostly on the ol lightning bolts, beat it without much trouble. Then I got the PC version in September/October with all the DLC and played some sort of strength/dex based character (though I ended up getting frustrated with the dex weapons I found and resorted to a mace most of the time I seem to recall) but got distracted by other games during that playthrough. I beat the old iron king and got a bit into the Iron crown dlc and I'm up to the Rotten and Lost Sinner but can't beat either on this character. I was thinking of starting again as a cleric and focusing on miracles again but one of my friends is playing a miracle user on my recommendation and says it sucks now, he only gets 3 lightning bolts and he's saying they're doing about 100 damage a pop to every enemy he's trying them on (knights in Heides Tower, Hollows in Bastille, sickle dudes in copse, etc) and it's not even one shotting hollows in forest of giants, he reckons the basic fireball spell and glove he got from No Mans Wharf is better. He's built heavily into faith, strength, endurance and attunement which I assume is still the way you would go for a miracle build right? His account is pretty different from how I remember my first playthrough so I'm assuming miracles got nerfed alot but they shouldn't suck complete poo poo right, there's got to be a way to make them at least worth using?

Ah, that's unfortunate. Might just go with a sorcerer instead then, heavenly thunder was fun but it's a bit unreliable for small "I am a swordsman" bosses.

So I started the game again using the "try out hexes and dark estocs" idea posted a few posts after my bitching about the now nerfed lightning spears (that's a bug that's going to get fixed at some point right?). Got my faith and int at 25 and my health/stamina levels are pretty good so I should start pumping up dex I guess right? Any paths I should focus on or items to go and get posthaste?

Oh, I'm not married to the estocs. That's jusy what the other dude mentioned so I assumed they were super sweet for that build but I'll use anything except a mace. Is the best Hex staff the sunset staff or one of the ones he sells? I got the sunset one from Felkin and the set of armour but the staff did not seem that great for hexes (the dark number was 52 compared to 100 something for the basic sorcerers staff, probably missing something obvious there). Progress wise I am at the Smelter demon, the sentinels, the Rotten and haven't even unlocked the forest at all yet (got three Yore branches though so can easily do that).

IIRC the Sunset Staff is the best catalyst for staff hexes (like Dark Hail or Dark Weapon). You were just looking at the base dark damage, you need to look at the base + scaling. Sunset Staff's dark scaling is way better.

If you want to use chime hexes the best is Caitha's Chime from Drangleic Castle. Until you get that you can use the Idol's Chime from Licia, which she gives you if you talk to here with 30 Faith, IIRC.

A good weapon for dark builds is the Silverblack Spear, dropped by the Grave Wardens that wield them. It has a fantastic moveset (pokes for r1s, wide sweeps for r2s) and has really good dark damage when you infuse it with dark. It requires 9 str and 16 dex to use.

Huh, ok thanks. I knew or could figure out all this back when the game originally came out but forgot it I think. I'll give that silverblack spear a go as one did drop on my jaunt up the earthen ring, then I'll go and farm up or find a darknight stone.

I forget what its called but the unholy skull spear you get from the 3 undead necromancer dudes boss (can't remember their name either Dark Souls II - I'll remember you forever, Lucille. (19)) is one of the best dark scaling weapons in the game and it hits like a truck.

Yeah I will definitely make that, I seem to recall every boss weapon I did make in my last playthrough being pretty underwhelming so it'll be nice to actually use one. Hopefully the durability on it is ok, the silverblack spear is good but breaks sooo quickly. It's at risk just after the 6 or 7 armoured guys before the ruin sentinels coming from mcduffs bonfire which is... not ideal.

The Roaring Halberd has less durability than the Silverblack Spear, but I suspect that your experience with the spear's durability may have more to do with the nature of that encounter than with the spear as a whole.

Yeah I think it's hitting walls just barely and also it's multihitting the soldiers which is draining it superfast. Not a big deal, I'll just equip something else for rank and file encounters and get the big guns out for bosses.

Also I saw a bit where a guy had 2 red phantoms fighting him and 3 white phantoms helping. Has that always been possible? I thought you could have no more than 2 allies?

Nah that's one of the features they're adding in the current gen console ports and presumably in the PC upgrade you have to pay for.

So is this the one that adds the new npc as well?

Edit: It totally is.

Go to the primal bonfire after the rotten. He probably appears elsewhere but my playthrough on the PC is just at Drangleic castle so can't check later in the game.

Man shine of amana is such a lovely area. I don't think any part of any game has aggravated me this much.

So does the new guy have any dialogue when the fight starts? Also does he drop a soul?

I'd assume the first sin is finding the fire and using it for selfish purposes right?

Still, most people make it sound like its going to be a whole other game and I just don't see them doing that. I interpret it more as "adjusted enemy positions" rather than "all new enemy positions"

It's probably going to be things like you can see in the trailer, Flexile Sentry in the Sinners Rise basem*nt, more Pursuers everywhere and things like that. Maybe the Mimics will be mixed up as well.

Also people are saying the chest in the Majula mansion has weapons in it (and it's supposed to close and respawn right?) but for me it's just open. Checked the chest in the basem*nt and the 1st floor of the mansion.

I want them to turn a bonfire into a mimic in Scholar of the First Sin. That'd be fantastic.

Turn an item into a mimic. Like a helm or something, just eats your head when you equip it.

Did they ever buff/fix the lightning spear thing? Where they made them do really low damage and also decreased the number of uses for them. I recommended a friend do a miracle build when he got Scholar cause they sounded decent from what I remembered of the base game without knowing they'd nerfed them and then felt super guilty cause he had a rough time, now I'm thinking of digging into Scholar and I'm wondering if they've done anything for that. If not then I guess I'll give regular soul magic a go, had a pure strength build in my first playthrough and then hexes on my second, both on regular Dark Souls 2.
