SSPH+ Summer School in Public Health Policy, Economics and Management in Lugano 2024Health in Emergencies: assessing and responding to health care needs in complex situations.Day 1 Today's lecture was quite interesting. I was introduced to health emergencies, monkey pox, hazard and risk. This course is being facilitated by Rowena M. (Dr Rowena Merritt) who is an alumna of the University of Oxford (I love the University of Oxford) and assisted by Lucía Aguirre Sánchez. Nihal Nassereddin taught the class about rapid needs assessment using Gaza Crisis as a case study. This lecture focused on the nutritional effect of the crisis in Gaza. This lecture gave me a more detailed information about the occurrences in Gaza than the information I got from the media.I have been taught about nutritional assessment in the bachelor of science in nursing I am pursuing but I learnt another way to assess nutrition in periods of crisis in this lecture. I had so much fun in the class discussion. Being an early stage health professional, I was highly motivated by the achievements of my teachers and my course mates which included people who work in WHO (World Health Organization), Federal Ministry of Health in different countries, dentists medical doctors, quarantine medical officer and other health professionals. I know this opportunity to learn from and learn with the best will set me up for success and great innovations in the health sector coupled with the fact that I am always open to more opportunities to learn and work in the health care sector. The group exercise was very educative. I was in the same group with some amazing people like Jörg Allmendinger, Xuan Thanh Bui, Shiferaw Tesfaye , Caron Kim Rahn, and other wonderful people. The group presentation was very brilliant and it was presented by Shiferaw Tesfaye. I couldn't travel to Switzerland to attend the course for some reasons but my experience online has been good. I hope to learn more in the remaining days of this program.

Some good news to share!A comparative policy analysis of Nigeria and Ghana’s response to addressing health workforce shortages, authored by my supervisor (Professor Beverley Essue) and I, has just been published in Social Science and Medicine journal (impact factor = 4.9). This work started off as an assignment from two courses I took during my PhD coursework – the Public Health Policy course by Professor Robert Schwartz and the Comparative Health Systems and Policy course by Professor Sara Allin. I found it valuable using topics I am interested in, and topics related to my thesis research for my course assignments. This has proven (at least to me) to be a useful strategy. I had previously published an article which also emanated from a course assignment (for Professor Whitney Berta’s course on Introduction to Health Services Research Theory and Methods) and one more article, also from a course assignment, is currently under peer-review. I am sharing this detail to encourage students that it is possible to make good use of assignments as an opportunity to not just learn, but to contribute to developing your areas of interest and contribute to the scientific literature. The comparative analysis article is now in press and the journal pre-proof has been published online and freely available here: https://lnkd.in/guSqSp_Y God is Great!Otuto Amarauche Chukwu

According to the World Health Organization, snake bite is a neglected public health issue in many places in the world, especially in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Although exact numbers are not available, an estimated 100,000 people die annually from snake bites, and roughly three times as many amputations and other permanent disabilities result from such bites in a single year. (who.int) The major cause for these devastating outcomes is the lack of antivenom. Now scientists believe they have come up with a solution:a synthetic or lab-made antibodythat can defend against a variety ofsnakebites. Read more about this development in the journal, "Science Translational Medicine." How can policymakers privilege voices that are traditionally unheard or overlooked? This study in our peer-reviewed journal, Public Health Research & Practice, details the protocol for research projects that will equip policymakers with the evidence and tools to meaningfully co-design policy with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It will pave the way for research partnerships to tackle complex health issues. Read the paper: https://lnkd.in/grmDrHM7Macquarie University | Heart Research Institute (HRI)

The interdisciplinary nature of Public Health The discipline of Public Health recognises the existence of a range of inter-related causes of ill health in topics such as obesity, infection control, health inequalities, lifestyle factors and social determinants of health. Topics and problems which would often benefit from: (a) complex interventions; and (b) different academic perspectives. We are very well aware that Public Health borrows from and incorporates many other disciplines, as it is a relatively new and still developing academic discipline. For example, people with an undergraduate degree in Public Health by the nature of their training have an interdisciplinary education “because of their knowledge and skills on areas like district health management, research, public health administration, health economics and medical sociology. Focusing on Health Promotion, Tilford noted “the lack of a universal definition of health promotion and likewise the definition of public health, although less contested, is also a developing concept and health care are prime topic that can benefit from transdisciplinary research. Because of these characteristics, many agree that Public Health is a discipline where interdisciplinary research would work particularly

I had the pleasure of participating in the SSPH+ Summer School in Public Health Policy, Economics and Management in Lugano three-day's "Health in Emergencies: Assessing and Responding to Health Care Needs in Complex Situations" course. The goal of this course was to provide participants with the practical skills and operational expertise necessary to effectively respond to public health emergencies, especially in fragile and crisis-affected contexts. Through real-life case studies, the course offered insights into effective emergency preparedness and response strategies, enabling participants to design and implement public health interventions that address both immediate risks and long-term community priorities.

As a final year public health student in Nigeria, it sometimes gets confusing to envision what my future holds in this field. To gain more clarity and widen my knowledge in public health, I decided to take a free course on "Introduction to Impact Evaluation of Health Communication" through the Global Health Learning platform. The course provided valuable insights into assessing the effectiveness of health communication strategies, which is crucial for improving public health outcomes. Understanding how to measure the impact of these strategies allows for more informed decision-making and the development of more effective health interventions. This knowledge is particularly important in the context of public health in Nigeria, where effective communication can significantly influence health behaviors and outcomes. By applying these evaluation techniques, I hope to contribute to more successful public health initiatives and ultimately improve community health and well-being.
